7 tips for enlarging your living room
When it comes to enlarging a living room, the task often seems difficult because you quickly feel limited by the surface area of the room in question. Fortunately, there are lots of easy ways to make your small living room feel more spacious. To make a living room feel bigger, follow three simple concepts:scale, light and minimalism.
1. choose furniture sizes proportionate to the size of your living room
To create a feeling of space in your living room, choose furniture that allows a little space between the sides of your furniture and the walls.
Avoid heavy furniture that takes up too much of the room's usable space. Opt for elegant sofas and armchairs of reasonable sizes, to avoid overloading your living room. If you fancy an imposing decorative piece, ideally hang it on the wall. The aim is to use as little floor space as possible.
2. Add mirrors
We all know that mirrors enlarge spaces, and they're a relatively simple way to make a small living room look bigger. You can hang one anywhere, but if you're strategic, you can really maximize the enlarging effect of your living room with mirrors. Hanging a mirror opposite a window reflects even more natural light into the room, making it look even bigger. You can also place a large mirror on a slanted stand in a corner, which instantly gives the impression that you have more space, especially if you choose one with a very minimalist frame.
3. Add a glass coffee table
Even if the coffee table is a secondary element in the living room, and other more important elements take precedence in terms of furniture, adding a glass coffee table is a good way of adding a sense of grandeur to your living room.
4. Abandon curtains and carpets
As we saw with the mirrors, to make your living room larger, you need to adopt trompe l'oeil techniques. Curtains prevent natural light from entering your living room, even if they don't cover the whole window. By eliminating them, you keep the space more minimalist and luminous. If you still want privacy in your living room, consider lightweight mesh or fabric blinds or shutters. Or if curtains are really essential, use a curtain rod that extends well beyond the window frame, so you can expose it completely and let the light in. As for rugs, avoid adding them to a small living room. They only reinforce the impression of a small space.
5. Opt for white
We all know the reflective qualities of white. It opens up a room, making it airy and light, calm and serene. Painting the walls and ceiling in the same shade of white only reinforces the sense of grandeur. What's more, this color "blends" the boundaries between wall and ceiling, encouraging the eye to move upwards and making the ceiling appear higher.
6. Think minimalist
In a small space, the more pieces, objects and patterns there are, the more cluttered it appears. Avoid having too many objects in your small living room, or at least group them together to avoid this overcrowded effect.
The key is to keep your decor as minimalist as possible. If you still want to opt for an accent wall in your living room, do so in a fairly discreet way and keep the rest of the room simple.
7. Add light fixtures
Just like choosing the right colors, choosing the right light fixtures with the right color scheme is also important. the right lighting can give the illusion that your living room is more spacious than it really is.
You can choose to add a floor lamp and one or two table lamps to your living room to have different levels of lighting in your living room.
